Book Recommendation: Anne Willan's One Souffle at a Time & A Recipe for Count Rocco's Minestrone

Last month I received a preview copy of Anne Willan's One Souffle at a Time. I have to admit that I had no clue who Anne is, but was interested in finding out. After all, there are very few books that tell a real person's story and include recipes that I will say no to....well, I could not really get into Dearie, but that's another story.

I absolutely loved Anne's memoir. I would

Perfect Winter Soup for Russian Recipes Revisited: Beef and White Beans Soup

October is almost over, so it's time for this month's Russian Recipes Revisited post. This time I give you one of my favorite recipes that my mom has been making ever since I remember: Beef and White Beans Soup. This soup is perfect for chilly days or nights, and is quite easy to make: it just takes a while to simmer.

It's hard to believe this is the first time I've ever made this soup. It

Butternut Squash Soup with Aleppo Peppers, Chickpeas & Pepitas

Oh butternut! Sometimes you remind me of myself. Hard on the outside, but shiny and gorgeous on the inside. I'm not even kidding :) Also, just like me, butternut squash is incredibly versatile and is so good for you!

Last week I picked up a butternut squash at the grocery store and decided to make soup. But I wanted to make this butternut squash soup different from the other ones I've made.

Black Bean and Chicken Soup Recipe

Back in March I bought myself my first oval Le Creuset. It's orange and beautiful, but it stood around my condo for months before I finally decided to use it. What was I waiting for???

The first dish I made in my oval Le Creuset was this Black Bean and Chicken Soup. The recipe has been sitting in my drafts folder for a while, and it's time I finally type it up. Make it! You will like it for

Summer Zucchini Soup Recipe Inspired by Dinner at Ambar Restaurant in DC

Earlier this month I was invited to try out the menu at the Balkan restaurant called Ambar in the Eastern Market neighborhood of DC. I asked my friend Evi to be my +1, and we put ourselves in the hands of the chef. Sometimes it's nice to surrender control and let someone else be in charge.

We enjoyed the view from the second floor of the restaurants and sipped on our beverages of choice: Evi

My friend Amy gave me Deborah Madison's Vegetable Literacy for my birthday a few months ago. Although the book is filled with an incredible amount of information, so far I've just looked at its pretty photos and made one recipe: Chilled Spicy Carrot Soup with Yogurt Sauce.

Summer Chili: Bean, Potato, Pepper & Sausage Stew Recipe

A few weeks ago I was invited by Lindley from Heather Freeman PR to attend a cooking class at Zaytinya taught by Chef Michael Costa and Aglaia Kremezi, Greek author, photographer and journalist. Before seeing a demonstration for three different recipes, we took a trip to Penn Quarter's Farmers Market where the chef from Zaytinya picked some of the ingredients that ended up in his dishes.

Quick & Easy Tomato Soup for One

Happy Monday! Did everyone have a good weekend? Mine was incredibly relaxing and lazy: exactly what I needed!

Although I made and photographed recipes for two new posts, I did not feel like editing the photos, so today you get an incredibly simple but delicious recipe for Quick & Easy Tomato Soup for One.

Although it's technically Spring (I say Spring starts March 1st), it's still cold in DC

Eating out with Instagram: NYC & Brooklyn Edition

At the end of January I went to New York City (for the first time in almost two years) to visit my good friend Jenny and her boyfriend Chris.

I really had no plans (very unlike me). I was just looking forward to spending a lot of quality time together, maybe doing some shopping and relaxing.

The one place I really wanted to go to, however, was Talde. I thought Dale was awesome on Top Chef and

Smoky Split Pea and Sweet Potato Soup with Turkey Sausage

I love soup year round, but especially when it's cold outside. There is just something so comforting about a hot bowl of soup. Over the weekend I wanted to make Aviva's Split Pea soup, but then I would not be able to blog about it again, and what's the fun in that? So I decided to make a few changes to her recipe and turned it into a Smoky Split Pea and Sweet Potato Soup with Turkey Sausage.

Borsch Recipe: Russian Recipes Revisited (RRR)

Borsch is one of my most favorite Russian dishes. I say Russian because that's where I grew up and was introduced to this recipe: please don't leave comments how it's a Ukrainian dish. We can all share it ;)

I've made borsch several times, so why blog about it again? Well, I have a good reason.

I was asked to do a demonstration on how to make borsch at the Jewish Museum of Maryland! Of

Escarole Soup with White Beans: Crazy Good Italian Cookbook by Mike Isabella

It's finally fall! The leaves are changing color, the air is crispy and the sweaters are now out of the closet!

Although I make soup year round, fall and winter are my favorite seasons for a big pot of soup simmering on the stove top. Soup can be a meal starter or a meal in itself. This Escarole Soup with White Beans from Mike Isabella's Crazy Good Italian is an excellent recipe to add to

Sweet Potato & Corn Southwestern Soup: A Recipe For Any Season

This Sweet Potato & Corn Southwestern Soup: A Recipe For Any Season came about because of my laziness. I did not feel like going to the grocery store and opted to create a dish from the ingredients I already had in my refrigerator and freezer. Why is it perfect for any season? Well, right now you can use fresh corn, while in the winter frozen corn will be just fine. All you need to do is dice

Perfect Summer Soup: Cold Potato & Spinach Soup Recipe. Memories of Growing Up in Russia

It is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too hot in DC. Yes, I realize I've lived here for a decade, but I still can't get used to the heat and humidity. I try to minimize the time I spend between one air conditioned place and another as much as possible.

But I still need to eat. This means I still need to cook. But turning on the oven or stove is not as appealing to me.

Where to Eat on H Street in DC? Toki Underground

Who loves ramen? I do!

The first time I went to Toki Underground, I fell in love with its small, eclectically decorated space, friendly staff, and bowls of steaming broth filled with noodles, vegetables, an egg and various other ingredients you may choose.

When my friend Cecilia suggested we go to Toki for a second visit last week, I said YES. Toki is located in the growing H Street

Love Avocados? Want Something Other Than Guacamole? Make Avocado Soup!

I did not eat my first avocado at least until I was thirteen years old. I doubt avocados were available in Moscow (Russia), so it wasn't until my family immigrated to Seattle, WA that I had my first taste of the green creamy smooth and buttery fruit.

I was hooked!

I can eat avocados simply seasoned with salt and lime juice, as a dip {guacamole}, sliced on sandwiches, or added to salads.
