Peachy Mango Salsa Recipe Inspired by Diamond Candles

What does Peachy Mango Salsa have to do with candles?? Well, there is a back story to this recipe.

Last month I received an email asking if I'd like to try out one of the Diamond Candles and write about them. I'll be honest: my first thought was what do candles have to do with a food blog? But then I decided to check out Diamond Candles website and found beautiful soy candles with fun names

Patty Pan Squash Succotash with a Poached Egg

Saturday morning. I wake up and look at my phone. It's not even 8 am. After a night of salsa dancing, that's not enough sleep at all. I fall back asleep. I wake up when it's almost 10 am. I get up, go to my living room, turn on the AC and the TV and watch the Food Network for an hour.

Wait, I'm hungry. I should make breakfast. Or is it lunch now? Who cares!?

I go to my kitchen. I haven't

Southwest Sweet Potato Patties

Sometimes my random ideas work out well, sometimes not so much. In the case of these Southwest Sweet Potato Patties, I loved the flavor, but the patties did not really held together well. I'm guessing there wasn't enough of a binder. If I were to make them again, I'd add an egg, panko crumbs or regular bread crumbs. Still, the color, the texture and the spiciness of these were great!

It all

Beet Salad with Mayonnaise & Walnuts: Russian Recipes Revisited

This Beet Salad with Mayonnaise and Walnuts is one of the easiest and most satisfying Russian salads I've grown up with. I actually almost forgot all about it, but then I made this beet dish from Jerusalem cookbook and thought: omg, the Russian version is sooooo much better. So I had to make it for this month's Russian Recipes Revisited.

What to do with Dates: Spinach Salad with Dates, Summer Berries & Almonds

Who wants dates!? If this wasn't a food blog, I bet you'd think I'm talking about the dates of romantic type. Alas, those have been quite rare over here, but there is always hope, right?

Ok, let's get back to the food.

Earlier this month I received four huge boxes courtesy of Bard Valley Natural Delights which contained organic Medjool dates, pitted dates, chili lime date rolls, almond

Mango, Tomato & Black Bean Salad (or Salsa)

Happy almost weekend! Are you doing anything exciting? I'm going to Philadelphia for a day tomorrow with a few friends and spending Sunday cooking and photographing and hopefully cleaning my condo. {Don't forget to call your mom for Mother's Day!!!}

This Mango, Tomato & Black Bean Salad recipe came about after I saw Bonnie Benwick's tweet last week:

What to do with Carrots: Whole Roasted Carrots with Fresh Fig Balsamic Vinegar

Over the weekend I did a TON of cooking for the blog. You've already seen the beautiful (if I say so myself) Mango Tart with Crystallized Ginger and Pistachios. Another recipe I made was Chilled Carrot Soup from Deborah Madison's latest cookbook: I will publish it either this Friday or next week.

The Chilled Carrot Soup called for 3 cups of sliced carrots, but I wasn't sure how many pounds

Avocado, Pea & Watercress Puree with Spicy Shrimp. Plus, an Avocado Giveaway for Mother's Day!

Last year, my friend Rachael, aka La Fuji Mama, sent me a box of six avocados from California Avocados Direct.

I loved those avocados! They arrived completely unripe and bright green and turned ripe and black while sitting on my kitchen counter. Of course I ate some of them in salads and on sandwiches, but from the rest I made an avocado soup.

This year, I got lucky again ;) Mimi Holtz

Mango & Sour Cherry Oatmeal Muffins

Whether you want a delicious breakfast, an addition to your brunch menu or an afternoon snack, you are going to love these Mango & Sour Cherry Oatmeal Muffins.

Last week I received a box of mangoes courtesy of Mango.org, and after eating most of the mangoes as is, I saved three champagne mangoes to make muffins.

If you can't find champagne mangoes, use regular ones. If you don't have frozen

Quick & Easy Tomato Soup for One

Happy Monday! Did everyone have a good weekend? Mine was incredibly relaxing and lazy: exactly what I needed!

Although I made and photographed recipes for two new posts, I did not feel like editing the photos, so today you get an incredibly simple but delicious recipe for Quick & Easy Tomato Soup for One.

Although it's technically Spring (I say Spring starts March 1st), it's still cold in DC

Nigella Lawson's Pasta with Brussels Sprouts and Potatoes from Nigellissima Cookbook

Earlier last week, my friend Paige emailed me a link with the subject line "looks like something like you!" It was a link to Diner's Journal and an opportunity to be a part of Recipe Lab and a live video chat with Nigella Lawson. All you had to do was leave a comment and you could be chosen!

I decided to listen to Paige and take my chances and leave a comment:

Cooking with Bobby Flay: Ok, His Bowls & Square Grill Pan ;) And Grilled New Potatoes and Zucchini with Radicchio, Goat Cheese and Aged Sherry Vinaigrette Recipe

I don't normally talk about my personal life here, but I have to tell you guys: I have a crush, and his name is BOBBY FLAY!!! Ok, so this might not be news to some of you. But what's not to like? He cooks, he grills, he is beyond charming, and in the photo below courtesy of my friend Cecilia it almost looks like he's proposing to me! {Alas, he has a lovely wife...figures.}

Russian Salted Cabbage with Carrots, Garlic & Apples: Russian Recipes Revisited

February is almost over, so it means it's time for another Russian Recipes Revisited post. This time I decided to copy my twin sister Anna and make Russian Salted Cabbage with Carrots, Garlic & Apples. My parents have been salting/pickling cabbage for as long as I remember, but this was the first time I gave this technique a try.

Burnt Eggplant with Tahini: Recipe from Plenty Cookbook

This Burnt Eggplant with Tahini is the second recipe I've made from Plenty Cookbook {the first one was Two-Potato Vindaloo}.

What to Make with Butternut Squash: A Perfect Winter Salad

You guys! My persimmon obsession is finally under control, but there is a new ♥ in my life. In fact, there are two new loves: pomegranate molasses and pomegranate arils. This past weekend I made THREE recipes, and each one included both the pomegranate molasses and pomegranate arils. Huge thank you to Cecilia for giving both of these to me since I could not find them in my store.

Two-Potato Vindaloo Recipe: Cooking from Plenty

A few months ago, my friend Julia asked if I'd like to take a cooking class at Sur La Table to learn how to make a few recipes from the Plenty cookbook by Yotam Ottolenghi. After my twin said that's a silly idea, Julia suggested we just buy the book ourselves and have a dinner party recreating some of the recipes!

I very rarely buy cookbooks: many of the ones I have, I've received as preview

Roasted Cauliflower with Tahini Dressing

From time to time I get opportunities to receive preview copies of cookbooks. At the end of 2012, I received a copy of Washington, DC Chef's Table by Beth Kanter with photographs by Emily Pearl Goodstein.

This cookbook is composed of recipes from Washington DC restaurants (and a few food trucks!) and provides readers with a bit of the restaurants' history.

Let's start with the good: the

Smoky Split Pea and Sweet Potato Soup with Turkey Sausage

I love soup year round, but especially when it's cold outside. There is just something so comforting about a hot bowl of soup. Over the weekend I wanted to make Aviva's Split Pea soup, but then I would not be able to blog about it again, and what's the fun in that? So I decided to make a few changes to her recipe and turned it into a Smoky Split Pea and Sweet Potato Soup with Turkey Sausage.
